On Mini Burn Out and Taking Breaks

April 19, 2022 / carlyb/ Leave a comment

(Image largely unrelated but snapped on one of my dawn walks this week) Recently I had a bit of a shift in my academic mindset so thought it was the perfect time to take stock and share a few recent reflections I’ve had in regards to burn out and rest. I keep a daily study journal, nothing fancy, just a …

Applying for a Post-Graduate Research Degree: My Application Timeline

March 2, 2022 / carlyb/ Leave a comment

One of the searches I ran time and time again while looking to apply for my postgrad is how long I should set aside for the application. I found a lot of sites stating that application times vary from university to university (true but not hugely helpful) but not much of a concrete timeframe that I could bear in mind …

Hello and welcome to Research from the Tub! Anybody reading this who already knows me might remember I blogged for a number of years under Writing from the Tub, sharing my thoughts about all things YA fiction and publishing as a whole. I’ve always loved blogging so it’s only fitting I create a new ‘from the Tub’ focusing on my …

  • 📚Review: League of Liars - Astrid Scholte📚

So, YA fantasy. It doesn’t have a huge presence on this page. I’ve always leaned towards contemporary/horror but League of Liars was the chosen book for one my reading groups so away I went to try something a little outside my usual genres.

What did I think? After a slow start with a little too much info-dumping, I enjoyed this! The second half definitely picked up the pace and I did make a bit of a 😱🫠 face at that ending. In all honesty I probably would have DNF this around 25% of the way through if it hadn’t been a book group read; the pace was slow, the plot wasn’t clear and the world building was iffy (loved the magic system, wasn’t so keen on the fact one curse phrase and one native berry had been developed so they were used as nauseam). Then around the 50% mark things did pick up, the pace shifted and the plot became much clearer. In terms of characters…aside from Graymond and Jey (who must have backache from carrying the lot of them) I’m not sure I’ll remember them within a week or two.

Reading this back my thoughts are harsher than I thought they’d be as I really did enjoy a lot of the second half and I’m very aware my words should be taken with a pinch of salt as I’m not a huge fantasy reader. I am glad I read this, though, and I’m keen to hear what the rest of the book group thought next week!

Have you read this one? I’d love to know your thoughts!

  • 📚Review: Idol - Louise O’Neill📚

Well, I’ve certainly got some catching up to do! Idol is the first Louise O’Neill book I’ve read since Asking For It and binging this new release in a single sitting has reminded me why she should be on my autobuy list!

Idol is the story of myriad wealthy, spiritual white influencers that show up unfollowed in social media feeds across the land, promising the cure all manner of mental (and oftentimes physical) ills through positive thinking and the like. O’Neill does such a perfect job at bringing Sam’s influencer persona to life, painting her as calm, privileged, the picture of success - and only ever a hair’s breadth away from melting down.

When Sam writes an ‘edgy’ essay to promote her new book (called Chaste…🫠) about a night of passion she spent with her high school best friend friend many years ago, everything seems to be going swimmingly…until the friend reappears in her life to share a different recollection of that night, one where she didn’t consent to the encounter. Desperate to clear her name and keep her career on track, Sam returns to her hometown to try and right past wrongs and get to the bottom of exactly what happened on that night.

I flew through this one, folks and I have *thoughts* - about new age influencer culture, consent, memory…so please pick up a copy so we can discuss, ta!

  • The best weekend being nature nymphs in the bluebell woods (and eating all the pizza and ice cream because ✨balance✨) at #festivalforpagansandwitches. The loveliest atmosphere ever and I’ve never felt more like the character on a book cover than in these photos 🥹💕✨
